Zhejiang is to actively and steadily deepen the pilot comprehensive reform of the college entrance examination

On April 9, Governor Yuan Jiajun made special survey of the pilot comprehensive reform of the college entrance examination. He emphasized that the comprehensive reform of the college entrance examination is a systematic project that is closely related to thousands of households and to social fairness and justice. It is necessary to adhere to the guidance of Xi Jinping’s socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era, to follow the requirements of “unshakably persisting in  reform and ceaselessly improving reform”, to stay true to the original aspiration of “promoting of students’ all-round development, cultivating and selecting talents for the state, and displaying fairness and justice”, and to maintain the Zhejiang characteristics of “learning what students are interested in, testing what students are good at, teaching what students need, and admitting  students according to their will”, so as to work under the guidance of the Ministry of Education to focus on key issues and key procedures to which candidates, teachers, schools, and society all pay close attention, to maintain strength and enhance synergy, to practise brainstorming and reach consensus, to actively and steadily deepen the pilot comprehensive reform of the college entrance examination, and to strive to win candidates’ satisfaction, teachers’ identification, and social recognition. Cheng Yuechong and Xu Liyi participated in the survey.

Yuan Jiajun visited Hangzhou Xuejun Middle School and Changzheng Middle School successively to gain an in-depth understanding of teachers’ teaching and research into teaching, and of candidates’ graduation examinations and selected examinations. He also hosted a symposium at Zhejiang Provincial Education Examinations Institute to listen carefully to the comments and suggestions on deepening the comprehensive reform of the college entrance examination from the heads of the education authorities, the principals of the universities, middle schools and primary schools, teachers, parents, and student representatives.

Yuan Jiajun pointed out that the pilot comprehensive reform of the college entrance examination is a glorious task handed over to Zhejiang by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council. Since launched in 2014, the pilot comprehensive reform has been vigorously and orderly promoted towards the right destination, in a steady process, with precious and valuable reform results and experience obtained. In the next step, it is necessary to fully implement the Party’s education policies, to conscientiously sum up experience, to highlight problem orientation, to actively and steadily deepen the pilot comprehensive reform of the college entrance examination, and thus to continue to be a pathfinder for reform. It is necessary to adhere to the original aspiration for the reform and closely follow the requirements of “the integration of students’ growth, national selection of talents, and social fairness”, so as to carry out a comprehensive, scientific and objective assessment of the current reform strategies for college entrance examination and to pay more attention to the traction role of “college enrollment”, the promotion of “secondary schools” and the propelling role of “society”. It is necessary to adhere to the Zhejiang characteristics, to highlight the importance of educating people, to follow the law of education, to take the healthy growth of students and their all-round and individual development as the ultimate purpose of reform, and to focus on cultivating students’ spirit of struggle, diligence, learning habits and learning abilities. It is necessary to pay attention to “doing subtraction”, not only by giving students the necessary choices, but also by keeping them simple and easy, in order to reduce the burden on students, to reduce stress for teachers, to ease anxiety for parents, and to facilitate school management. It is necessary to ensure fairness and justice, so as to ensure fair access to the examination and enrolment, open procedures, and fair results. It is necessary to care for the teachers, so as to enable the majority of high school teachers to have a sense of well-being in their posts, a sense of accomplishment in their careers, a sense of gain in benefits, and a sense of honor in society.
