City FlowerShaoxing is the hometown of orchid. Its history in orchid breeding can be traced back to the Spring and Autumn Period when the ruler Gou Jian of the State of Yue grew orchid in the Lanzhu Mountain. Lanzhu Mountain is located in Lizhu town, over 15km to the southwest of the city proper. It is said that in Lizhu and in the neighboring Tangdi, a lot of households have been living for generations on the nursing, planting and selling of orchid. In the early spring, nurseries in Lizhu and Tangdi are full of orchid that bloom one after another, and radiate intoxicating fragrance. Gardeners here have bred many rare species such as lotus petal, plum petal, narcissus petal, butterfly petal and chypre, and the most famous are "green cloud"," Songmeui" and "Yuandiemei" which are at once peculiar, antique, queer and fragrant. Orchid nursed in Shaoxing are much appreciated by horticulturists, and not only well received across China but also exported to Japan and Southeast Asian countries. Orchid is the city flower of Shaoxing.
